Anubias barteri is a popular and relatively easy plant to grow. As such, this has led to the recognition, and subsequent propagation, of color variants. Because Anubias propagate by rhizome, selection of desired traits is straightforward—just select (clip off) the desired portion you like and let it grow!

The practice of selective breeding, or in this case selective propagation, has led to a stunning color form, Anubias barteri ‘Nana Pinto White’. Other names for this color variant include Anubias barteri var. nana ‘Marbled White’, A. nana ‘White Marble Pinto’, and other similar permutations. This variegated form is currently quite rare in Anubias which is reflected in its price. Variegation, while uncommon, is also attractive due to its color pattern. The marbling effect on the leaves is eye-catching, even more so on a dark substrate.

This nana variant requires no additional nutrients or CO2, thus has the same general requirements as a typical green variety. Arguably, the marbling of white has lessened the presence of chlorophyll in the leaves, requiring a bit more light to grow at the rate of green leafed variants.

As with all Anubias, the Pinto White grows vegetatively by rhizome. It can be grown attached to wood, rocks, or any substrate as long as the roots are not completely buried. This variant is a true beauty and a tempting investment for the freshwater plant aficionado!
